What is tubing mascara? How to apply mascara for the perfect lash look

by Aaron|December 29, 2023
How to Apply Mascara Perfectly Every Time

When it comes to makeup, few products make such a big impact as mascara. Adding a quick coat to an otherwise bare face can really bring the focus right to your eyes. Having the right formula and applying it the right way, however, can make all the difference. If you’re wondering whether you should choose a traditional mascara or give tubing mascara a try, we can help you take the next step to refine your lash look. Follow along as we answer questions such as:

What is tubing mascara?

Traditional mascara helps define your eyelashes by coating them with a combination of dark pigments, oils, waxes and fibers to help them look darker, thicker and longer. Tubing mascara, on the other hand, features a polymer-based formula that forms tiny “tubes” around your eyelashes as it dries. Because of the way tubing mascaras work, they are resistant to smudging, running and flaking.

How do I remove tubing mascara?

When you wear traditional mascara, you’re reaching for your favorite eye makeup remover or face cleanser when it’s time to take it off. When it comes to tubing mascara, the removal process is totally different. A combination of warm water and gentle pressure with your fingertips or a washcloth helps release the tubing mascara from each of your lashes, so you don’t need to use traditional makeup remover or any type of cleanser.

Is tubing mascara waterproof?

Tubing mascaras tend to be both water-resistant and sweat-resistant, meaning they won’t flake, run or smudge if you cry or get sweaty after a workout. Because tubing mascara is removed with warm water, it isn’t technically waterproof.

What is the best tubing mascara?

blinc Lash Extension Tubing Mascara

When it comes to tubing mascaras, blinc was the first on the scene. The company launched its first tubing mascara back in 1995. Since then, the company has introduced a number of different tubing mascara formulas. For long, lustrous lashes with a semi-matte finish, try blinc Lash Extension Tubing Mascara. The long-wearing formula was created to lengthen lashes and give the effect of lash extensions, and it also contains shea butter and biotin to help condition your lashes while you wear it. Another option is blinc Ultravolume Tubing Mascara, which visibly enhances both volume and length of eyelashes with a matte finish.

Tips for applying mascara

RevitaLash Cosmetics Signature Eyelash Curler

Whether you’re using a tubing mascara or a traditional mascara, curling your lashes with an eyelash curler is an easy way to make your eyes appear bigger and brighter. The key is to use a curler such as the RevitaLash Cosmetics Signature Eyelash Curler before you have applied your mascara. If you’ve already put on mascara, step away from the lash curler! When mascara dries, it makes your eyelashes harder, less flexible and more likely to break if you try to curl them.

When applying mascara, start with your bottom lashes to avoid smudges. If you start with your top lashes, they’ll smudge when you look down to focus on your bottom lashes. Using zig-zag motion when applying mascara is also a great way to separate your lashes as you apply. Starting at the base of your lashes, wiggle the wand while slowly moving outward. This technique helps the wand reach every lash while giving them a more curled appearance.

Last but not least, there’s one thing you want to avoid when applying mascara. Whatever you do, don’t pump the wand inside the tube to get more product! Not only does this push air into the tube and cause your mascara to dry out faster, it can also trap bacteria inside the product. Instead, gently twist the wand back and forth to pick up more product for your next coat.

What is the best traditional mascara?

Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara

If you prefer to stick with a traditional mascara, Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics Outrageous Lashes Mineral Lengthening Mascara is a favorite of LovelySkin Vice President Nancy Schlessinger. “This mascara has just the right thickening and lengthening I prefer, and it doesn’t clump up on the wand,” she says. Glo Skin Beauty Lash Lengthening Mascara is another stellar option. It features a silicone brush for maximum separation and a richly pigmented formula that both lengthens and volumizes.

Using a mascara primer can also help your traditional mascara stay in place all day and create the look of fuller, longer lashes even before you apply your mascara. jane iredale PureLash Lash Extender & Conditioner is one option to add to your makeup arsenal. It contains algae extracts and beeswax to help moisturize and protect your eyelashes so they’re less prone to breakage. It’s meant to be paired with a traditional mascara, so swipe it on as a base coat before adding one to two coats of your favorite mascara formula.
