The FDA approved Perlane, a filler for deeper wrinkles, on May 2nd. We were especially excited as this was a product on which we did the pivotal trials in Omaha. During our trials, this product performed extremely well, and patients who participated in the trial seemed to like it very much. We will still use Restylane, but Perlane will be helpful as a deeper filler and for tougher wrinkles. It appears to last longer than Restylane, which lasts about six months, but there haven’t been any trials to quantify this yet. We expect to get the Perlane in our office in about 2 weeks and are having a special on Restylane and Perlane at $600 a syringe ($50 off) for its introduction. This special won’t last long, so come in now if you are thinking about getting this exciting new product.
We have been anticipating RevaleSkin’s arrival for 6 months now and are very happy to have it available shortly for our patients and customers. This new product is a topical regimen that acts as an antioxidant and contains a cleanser, night cream and day cream with sunscreen (SPF 15). It is derived from the outer shell of the nearly ripe coffee bean and has the highest level of antioxidant ever tested, even more than green tea. As we start summertime, we should remember that May is the month the American Academy of Dermatology has designated Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Skin cancer is truly an epidemic which is becoming worse every year. At this time, over 1 million cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed this year. One in 27 people will develop melanoma in their lifetime as well. So it is very important to have your skin checked by a dermatologist yearly and even more important if you have a history of skin cancer or melanoma in your family. As always, it is best to stay out of tanning booths and never go out in the sun without some form of protection. Most people don’t realize that drug reactions happen after about one to two weeks of being on a drug, not immediately. It takes about that much time for the body to figure out it is allergic. On the other hand, if you are already allergic to a drug and then mistakenly take it again, a drug reaction will happen almost immediately and can be very serious, so never take a drug if you think that you may be allergic – always check first with your pharmacist. If you suspect you are having an allergic reaction, stop the drug immediately as this will lessen the resultant reaction. If any signs of difficulty in breathing or swallowing occur, you should seek help immediately.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) observational study
We are conducting a very important observation study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a $10.00 gift card after each subject interview.

Rosacea study
Millions of people have persistent “red cheeks” or always look “flushed”. While redness may not be bothersome, many of these same people also have acne scattered across their face. You may be suffering from “Acne Rosacea” which is a combination of redness and acne. Skin Specialists, PC is conducting a research study to test an investigational treatment for this more advanced Rosacea condition. You may qualify for this study if you are 18 years of age or older, and have persistent redness and at least 10 acne-like bumps on your face. Psoriasis study
Do you have psoriasis? If so, you may qualify to take part in a research study conducted by Skin Specialists to test whether an investigational drug works in people who have had an inadequate response to an anti-TNF agent (i.e., Enbrel, Humira, or Remicade). Participants will receive study-related tests and study medications at no cost. There will be compensation for your participation. To be eligible you must be 19 years of age or older, must be in good general health, must have moderate to severe psoriasis affecting at least 5% of your body, must have had an inadequate response to an anti-TNF agent, and cannot have psoriatic arthritis.

Athlete's foot study
Skin Specialists, PC is currently enrolling people with visible signs of athlete's foot in a research study to compare an investigational generic cream to an already marketed prescription cream and a placebo. You may be eligible to participate if you are 12 years of age or older, have burning, itching or redness on your feet or between your toes, and can visit our office 3 times in 6 weeks. There will be a compensation for your participation.

Sun Spots (Actinic Keratosis)
Do you have scaly or crusty lesions on your face or scalp due to sun exposure? Are you 18 years of age or older?
