Best Procedures for Winter; Savings and Gift Certificates for the Holidays!

Skin Cancer Happens Year Round
With the winter months upon us, it's important to remember that skin cancer doesn't take these months off, but can occur at any time of the year. In fact, I frequently find (as in the article below) that many skin cancers show up during this time of year, when a tan fades and spots that looked innocuous turn concerning. For this reason, it is important to make an appointment if any moles appear to be changing or growths continue to bleed or turn dark or scaly. As always, don't forget to wear a good sunscreen if going out daily, and especially when traveling to sunny climates (or for those of you who live in sunny areas).

New Acne Drug Researched at Our Clinic Approved - Aczone
A drug our research arm, Advanced Skin Research Center, researched back in 2005, has been approved and released. Its name is Aczone, and it is a topical form of dapsone, a drug that was approved many years earlier in an oral form, but never in a topical form. Now available in a topical form, it appears to have a good effect on acne. It is also possible that this drug will be useful for rosacea and other skin conditions such as eczema, but we will need to perform further research to discover if this is true.
One challenge with this drug is that if you are using benzoyl peroxide in any form as well, it can turn the face orange! That clearly limits its usefulness, given the large amount of patients on forms both over the counter and prescription forms of Benzoyl Peroxide. Still, we see quite a few patients where this drug may prove helpful and will be integrating it into our approach for acne patients. We are very proud that we helped in its development.

Eyelash Growth Products Here and Coming Soon!
While we have offered many eyelash growth products for several years now, one is soon to be approved by the FDA. It will be coming from Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, and will be a prescription only product. We expect it to be a great product, but prescription status may limit its availability. New Studies
We are very pleased that several of the drugs we are researching are nearing the approval process or finishing the research phase. Several of our recent studies have been written up in dermatology journals, including the one for toenail fungus that we are enrolling for currently. Additionally, the ongoing trials on Botox alternative treatments (Reloxin, PurTox and NT201) have been recently reported in the press as well. Lastly, the trials we are doing on new drugs for psoriasis are in the news, with the new injectable drug from Centocor close to approval. Centocor’s medication will require only four injections a year, a huge advancement in the treatment of psoriasis.

Skincare Tip of The Month: Dry Skin Remedies
In addition to having great family times at this time of the year, there is one other thing that most of my patients have, and that is dry skin! Luckily, we have some great new options for this, including one that I have started recommending to many of my patients, the Elta Melting Moisturizer, which is fairly thick, but melts on your skin and protects it nicely. Additionally, for those of you who work with water and have to wash hands frequently, I recommend the Theraseal product, which seals in moisture and keeps skin healthy, even in the face of frequent washing. Acne Study
Dr. Schlessinger is currently screening for an acne study. The study involves testing a topical medication for mild to moderate acne, will last for 12 weeks, and require you to be seen in the office for 5 follow up visits. Toenail Fungus (onychomycosis) Study
Skin Specialists PC, is currently conducting a study for patients that have been diagnosed with toenail fungus (Onychomycosis). In order to qualify, you must have at least one of your big toenails affected 25%.
This study involves the use of an oral medication, with five different dosing regimens tested. The study will last for 58 weeks, and will require 14 visits to the office.

Psoriasis Study
We are currently recruiting for a new psoriasis study involving the use of an investigational injectable drug to treat the symptoms of moderate-severe plaque psoriasis. The study will last for 12 weeks and require approximately 7 visits to our office. In addition to coming to our office, you must agree to go to an off-site location to obtain an EKG and chest x-ray.
In order to qualify, at least 10% of your body must be affected with plaque psoriasis, and you must be healthy, must not have used Enbrel (injectable medication to treat psoriasis), and must be at least 19 years of age. There is no cost for you to participate, and there will be compensation for your participation. Eczema (atopic dermatitis) Observational Study
Skin Specialists PC is conducting a very important observation study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years, and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a $10.00 gift card after each subject interview

Dr. Schlessinger has begun recruitment for a study to determine the benefits of using a new oral medication to treat the signs and symptoms of eczema. The study will last four months, with approximately 11 required visits to our office. You must be 19-65 years old and be in good health to participate.
