In a follow up to a story in this newsletter recently, we noted that the two main companies, (Fig and MedSculpt), promoting LipoDissolve (a non-FDA approved procedure which has been banned in Europe, Brazil and Canada), have filed for bankruptcy. This comes after Fig, based in St. Louis, was given an unacceptable rating by the St. Louis Better Business Bureau. Additionally, I have worked to introduce legislation in Nebraska, where I practice dermatology, to ban this procedure. It is very exciting to be a part of ensuring that cosmetic surgery is made safer for our patients. In this case it is important to make sure the procedure is safe before it is used outside of the trial process. Currently, our research arm, Advanced Skin Research Center, is performing trials on a new version of this product, all with FDA oversight, and the new version appears to be promising. Time will tell, however, and I will keep you informed.

Two of our favorite products on the website, Jan Marini Eyelash Intervention and Masses of Lashes Mascara, have been discontinued indefinitely due to a patent fight between Jan Marini and a large pharmaceutical manufacturer, Allergan. Previously, Jan Marini had been in discussions with the FDA about the promotion of these products and had been given the green light by the FDA to sell them, but the battle with Allergan was too costly for them to undertake as a small company. We have adequate products in stock for now, but they will not be available after this stock is depleted, so if you have used it and want to stock up, now is the time to do so. I was quoted in a Wall Street Journal article on this recently.

A new study (shown below) has determined there is a slight increase in skin cancer in patients receiving treatments for rheumatoid arthritis. Many of these drugs are also used for psoriasis patients, and it seems reasonable to assume that they may cause increased risk of skin cancer in these patients as well. For this reason, it is important to be evaluated for skin cancer while on these drugs. We take the use of these new treatments very seriously, and have found that they are useful, but only if carefully monitored.

Skin Specialists will soon be conducting two pre-cancerous lesions studies, which will involve a topical medication. Psoriasis study
We are eagerly anticipating a new psoriasis study, which will involve an injectable medication for the treatment of moderate to severe Psoriasis. In order to qualify you must have at least 10% body surface area affected. This is a 52-week study, and will require you to be seen in the office approximately 18 times. Eczema (atopic dermatitis) observational study
Skin Specialists is conducting a very important observation study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a $10.00 gift card after each subject interview.
