Dr. Schlessinger Featured on the cover of MedEsthetics Magazine
This month I was very honored to be featured in the leading trade magazine for cosmetic dermatologists. In case you are interested, I am including a link to this article in the newsletter for our friends and patients who have supported me and my clinic and website from the beginning. Thank you so much for your support!

New Filler, Evolence, only available at Skin Specialists in Omaha
Because I was one of the researchers for the new product, Evolence, I am very pleased to be one of the first in the nation and the first in Nebraska to have this exciting new filler product. Evolence is a filler made from porcine collagen and produced by Ortho, the maker of Retin-A. It is their first venture into the cosmetic filler market and they are introducing a product that will offer quick recovery and less bruising, in my opinion. While I still am enthusiastic about Restylane, Juvederm and Perlane, this product is probably better for busy, important people who need to keep downtime to a minimum. It appears to do quite nicely, except for lips, where it can cause lumps. Also, it offers a little less bang for the buck as far as lift goes and it may be that it is better for less advanced wrinkles.

I was privileged to be able to use it outside of the United States in a trial prior to its being approved, and my patients were very enthusiastic about it.

If you are interested in this new product, contact Rachael, at (402) 334-7546 and we will email you or give you a call just as soon as it arrives. We expect it in the office shortly.

New Treatments for Vitiligo
Heliocare is used as a treatment for a variety of skin conditions, ranging from sun allergy to sun protection, and now, including vitiligo. This exciting development was discussed at a recent study meeting I attended in Chicago. It is especially exciting, as vitiligo is one of those conditions that tends to be frustratingly difficult to treat.

While Heliocare is not going to be the answer to every patient's concerns, it has been received well by a large number of patients in Dr. Pearl Grime's clinic in Los Angeles. Dr. Grimes is one of the leading experts on this condition, and seemed particularly impressed that this product can help with many patients. I would still recommend seeing a dermatologist in addition, to make sure there are no other medical conditions that need treatment.

Problems with MediSpas
Recently, in the same week, I received two letters from consumers that left me even more concerned about patients who seek care in MediSpas to cut costs and for convenience, only to be harmed forever. One letter was from a lady on the East Coast who had laser liposuction performed by an emergency physician and now has scarring, while the other was from a person in Lincoln, Nebraska who had LipoDissolve performed and now has terrible scarring and deformity of her abdomen. The one thing that these letter writers have in common is that they wish they had seen a board-certified dermatologist instead of focusing on price first.

I have written an article on this issue and will continue to speak out about this, both in print and in any legislative way that I can.

Skin Cancer Rates increasing among younger women

A recent study from The National Cancer Institute showed that skin cancer rates among younger women are increasing significantly. The most concerning aspect of this study is that the type of cancer being seen is melanoma, which can be deadly. There is a 50% increase in skin cancer, and it appears that this may be due to tanning bed use. Please think twice before going to indoor tanning booths, and, if you have any suspicious spots or moles, go to your dermatologist for evaluation.

New Treatment fo Poison Ivy
Vanos cream is a product that we researched to prove its safety in children and now it appears to be one of the best topical treatments available for poison ivy. Recent publications show that it can reduce this tough condition to a significantly less 'sticky' problem within days. Naturally, avoidance is the key to avoid poison ivy, but if you have the misfortune of developing it this medication may help.

One other hint — if you are aware that you will be in poison ivy and want to prevent suffering after exposure, soap up with a soap like ivory before you go out and let it dry on your skin. Then, once you are done with your outdoor duties, go inside and simply rinse the soap off with a detergent like Tecnu. Also, avoid rinsing these clothes with the clothes of the rest of the family in order to protect them.
