New Treatments for Wrinkles on the Horizon (Reloxin, PurTox and NT201)
It has been over four years since our clinic started performing studies on Botox Competitors such as Reloxin and other treatments for wrinkles. While Reloxin still isn't approved by the FDA, it is getting closer to approval and may be approved by next year. Below is a link to an article I wrote for the journal, Skin and Aging, which covers this area. It has been exciting to be part of these trials and see this product and others go through the process of FDA testing. I will continue to update you on progress in this area. In the meantime, we are offering special prices for Botox and fillers.

Acne Scar Treatment with Fraxel laser
While Fraxel laser and the Palomar 1540 laser were introduced for use in wrinkle treatments, it appears that they may have even more effect on scars from acne. The following pictures are for patients with acne scarring and show tremendous improvement after treatments with these lasers. It is exciting to see that these treatments offer solutions with little or no downtime and are constantly being improved.

Acne and Psoriasis Studies
We are currently recruiting patients for acne and psoriasis studies, among many of the trials we are conducting. The acne trials are for mild to severe acne and the psoriasis trials are for moderate to severe psoriasis. In all the trials, patients are compensated for their participation. See below for particulars on some of these trials

Update on LipoDissolve Legislation
The Lipodissolve bill introduced into the Nebraska legislature has been put on hold for this session, but is stated to be reintroduced in the next legislative session. During this legislative session problems caused by the use of this procedure were discussed, but the senators wanted more evidence prior to further work on the bill. This reflects what happened in Kansas, which recently passed a bill that bans this procedure. It would be hoped that our work will lead to more patient safety in this arena.

Botox In the News - Concerns in patients with cerebral palsy
We have seen several reports of concerns about Botox use in the media. Although I take this very seriously, I wanted to emphasize that these reports do not relate to the type of Botox that we use for cosmetic work. In our cosmetic work, we use very small amounts of Botox and the type of procedure we are doing for wrinkles hasn't ever exhibited the problems indicated in the reports about children with cerebral palsy. Additionally, there are 30 years of data showing Botox to be safe as we use it. I will continue to keep our patients informed of any news related to this issue, but this seems to be quite overblown in the press and not related to the type of procedure done for the majority of Botox users.

LovelySkin.com Donates Make Up to Victims of Abuse
This past month, LovelySkin.com donated thousands of dollars of makeup to women who are victims of abuse, in a partnership with Heartland Family Services. I am proud to say that it was my daughter Claire's idea for this project. We will be working with them in the future to help women regain their confidence and look their very best.

Sunny days ahead should mean protection for the skin
We see quite a few patients in the office who burn badly when in the sun for the first time. During this time when sunny days start up again for those in colder climates, it is a good idea to be very careful and avoid getting too much sun at once. Always remember to apply sunscreen every three hours (or less if you are prone to sunburn) and consider a new product we offer, Heliocare, a pill that protects you from the sun.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) observational study
Skin Specialists is conducting a very important observation study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.

In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.

Dr. Schlessinger is currently screening for two acne studies; one testing a topical medication and one testing an oral medication for patients with more severe acne. In addition to the two we are recruiting for right now, a third acne study will be starting in April. This new acne study will involve a topical treatment for mild to moderate acne to the face. Patients must be at least 12 years of age to qualify for all three studies. If you are interested in learning more about these studies, please contact Nicole or Rhonda at 402-697-6599.

Skin Specialists will soon be conducting a pre-cancerous lesions study, which will involve a topical medication. This study will last for 16 weeks and will require 4 visits to the office. To qualify for this study you must have 4-8 clinically diagnosed Actinic Keratosis lesions either on your face or balding scalp. If you are interested in learning more about this study please contact Rhonda or Nicole at 402-697-6599.
