Hand Bacteria More Common in Women
A recent study showed that hand bacteria is more common in women than in men. While this study is interesting, it may or may not have any relevance, as bacteria can be both ‘good’ and ‘bad’, and all of us carry bacteria on our bodies to some degree. We emphasize, however, that it is important to wash hands after any concerning exposures, and common sense dictates that hand washing in the health profession is of utmost importance!

Psoriasis Drug (Raptiva) Warning
We have many psoriasis patients on drugs that can affect the immune system. I have always had concerns about these drugs’ effects upon patients with respect to infections, and a recent FDA warning for Raptiva bolsters my concerns. While Raptiva is the only drug included in the warning, in my opinion all immune-related drugs for psoriasis (Enbrel, Humira, Raptiva, Amevive and Remicaid) should be included in this concerning category. Although we continue to prescribe these drugs, we warn patients to be very careful to discontinue them immediately if they exhibit signs of illness or infection, and call us or their physician who is administering the drug.

New Studies
We are very pleased to see that several of the drugs we are researching are nearing the approval process or finishing the research phase. Several of our recent studies have been written up in dermatology journals, including the one for toenail fungus that we are enrolling for currently. Additionally, the ongoing trials on Botox alternative treatments (Reloxin, PurTox and NT201) have been recently reported in the press as well. Lastly, the trials we are doing on new drugs for psoriasis are in the news, with the new injectable drug from Centocor close to approval. Centocor’s medication will require only four injections a year, a huge advancement in the treatment of psoriasis.
Currently, we are continuing to perform clinical trials on a new psoriasis injection from Abbott, acne medications ranging from topical medicines to oral medications, wrinkle treatments, and toenail fungus therapies. There will be other clinical trials starting in the next several months as well which include injectable fillers and other medications for dermatologic conditions.

Skincare Tip of The Month: Sunscreens are not created equally!
A recent article in Medwire addresses the importance of choosing your sunscreen wisely. In my career as a dermatologist I have always cautioned my patients and newsletter subscribers on the importance of using a good sunscreen, high in protection from both UVB and UVA. Acne Study
Dr. Schlessinger is currently screening for three acne studies - one which involves testing a topical medication for mild to moderate acne, and the others which involve testing an oral medication for patients with more severe acne. Toenail Fungus (onychomycosis) Study
Skin Specialists PC, will soon be conducting a study for patients that have been diagnosed with toenail fungus (onychomycosis). In order to qualify, you must have at least one of your big toenails affected 25%.
The study will involve the use of an oral medication, with five different dosing regimens tested, the study will last for 58 weeks and will require 14 visits to the office. Taking certain cholesterol medications can exclude you from participating in this study.

Psoriasis study
We are currently recruiting for a new Psoriasis Study involving the use of an investigational injectable drug to treat the symptoms of moderate-severe Plaque Psoriasis. The study will last for 12 weeks, and will require approximately 7 visits to our office. In addition to coming in to our office, you must agree to go to an off-site location to obtain an EKG and chest x-ray.
In order to qualify, at least 10% of your body must be affected with plaque psoriasis, and you must be healthy, must not have used Enbrel (injectable medication to treat Psoriasis), and must be at least 19 years of age. There is no cost for you to participate, and there will be compensation for your participation.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) observational study
Skin Specialists, PC. is conducting a very important observation study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to the office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a $10.00 gift card after each subject interview.

Eczema Study
Dr. Schlessinger has begun recruitment for a study to determine the benefits of using a new oral medication to treat the signs and symptoms of eczema. The study will last four months with approximately 11 required visits to our office. You must be 19-65 years old and be in good health to participate.
