New Study For Crow’s Feet
We are very fortunate to be involved in a new study that will begin shortly on crow’s feet. The study is designed to test a new form of botulinum toxin applied topically on crow’s feet. In order to participate, you must be between 30 and 60 years of age and have moderate crow’s feet. The study will last up to three months, during which time you will not be able to have injections of botox, fillers or other cosmetic facial procedures.

Can Brown Fat Help Us?
A recent article in the Science Daily reported that brown fat can actually help us to decrease weight! We have always known that brown fat is more efficient and happens more in fit individuals and leaner people, but now it appears that it may not be a coincidence that they have this form of fat. Interestingly, when we liposuction individuals, luckily this form of fat is saved, as it doesn’t tend to suction well. In the future, it appears that there will be research to find out if this form of fat can be promoted in healthy individuals.

Hydroquinone Update
For the past several years, we have kept our patients and customers informed of the challenges regarding potential FDA actions on hydroquinone and its sale. As of now, it appears that this issue is on the back burner of the FDA, but it is possible that some action will occur soon, with the new FDA director in place. If and when it does, it could affect many of our products that contain hydroquinone. This may be a good time to stock up on these items in anticipation of any regulatory activity. We are holding a 15% off sale on any of these products until the end of April, including the entire Obagi line of products.

Hidradenitis Suppurativa Study
Hidradenitis suppurativa, more commonly known as boils in the underarm areas and groin, is a condition that until now has been poorly understood and poorly treated. We are very happy to have a new study drug that we will be testing on this perplexing condition. Psoriasis Trial
Two psoriasis trials will be beginning here shortly. Patients in the trials will be in the mild, moderate or severe categories of psoriasis and should be over 18 years of age. One treatment uses a topical medication, the other one uses an injectable medication.

Rosacea Trial

Sun Damaged Skin (Actinic Keratosis)
Dr. Schlessinger is now enrolling patients for an Actinic Keratosis/pre-cancerous lesions study. In order to qualify for this study, you must be at least 19 years of age and have at least 5 actinic keratosis lesions in a 25 cm squared area. The lesions must be located on the face, scalp, forearms, or back of hands.
The study will involve the use of a topical gel that will be applied to only the targeted areas twice a day for 12 weeks. The study will last for 16 weeks and require 6 visits to the office.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) Observational Study
Skin Specialists PC, is conducting a very important observation study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a $10.00 gift card after each subject interview.

New Study on Topical Botox Competitor
It may sound too good to be true, but we are recruiting patients for a clinical trial on a new topical Botox competitor. This drug is applied to the skin just one time during the study. For this particular study we are testing two different doses of the study drug compared to a placebo.
In order to qualify for this study you will need to be between the ages of 30-60, have moderate to severe wrinkles around the eyes (crows feet) at rest and at smile, be in good general health, and willing to come in to the office 6 times over the course of 90 days.

New Study on Hidradenitis Suppurativa (Boils under the arms and in groin area)
We are very excited to be recruiting patients for a clinical trial on a condition that, so far, has had very poor responses to treatment. This condition is seen as boils that occur in the underarm area and groin and tend to get worse with time. The drug that is going to be used is an injectable medication. The study will be a 52 week study with 13 required visits to the office.
In order to qualify you must be 18 years of age or older, be in good general health, willing to come in for all required visits.

Wrinkle Study/Dermal Filler
In the near future Skin Specialists, PC will be conducting a dermal filler study for treatment of nasolabial folds (laugh lines). We are hoping to start the screening process sometime this summer! This study will last for 24 weeks and requires that you be seen for 7 follow up visits.
