Update on Raptiva
We have been involved with clinical research on many new drugs for psoriasis, and one of the newer drugs for psoriasis had a recent FDA notification. Dr. Schlessinger Quoted in O Magazine
Dr. Schlessinger was recently quoted in O Magazine on the treatment of milia, a condition that is noted as small white bumps on the skin. The condition usually happens as a result of poor exfoliation, but it can also be due to small traumatic injuries to the skin. While we often recommend a minor procedure in the office where electrical current is used to 'zap' the milia, there are also products that can better exfoliate the skin and lead to less difficulties over time.

Skincare Tip of The Month: Does Sunscreen Lead to Vitamin D Deficiency?
When skiing, there is quite a risk of sunburn. An article in the British literature states this and reminds patients to avoid going on the slopes without adequate sun protection.
Many recent studies (funded in part by the tanning industry) have suggested that sunscreen use may cause vitamin D deficiency. While dermatologists, myself included, realize the importance of healthy vitamin D levels, the hype surrounding these claims may be causing some people to abandon sunscreen use and may lead to increased rates of melanoma and skin cancer because of lack of protection.
A recent analysis by the New York Times concluded that "sunscreen can reduce vitamin D production, but probably not enough to have a significant effect." We are including the full text of the article, but encourage all of our patients to wear sunscreen while outside and check their vitamin D levels if they have any concerns about deficiencies.

Sun Spots (Actinic Keratosis)
Dr. Schlessinger is now enrolling patients for an Actinic Keratosis/pre-cancerous lesions study. In order to qualify for the study, you must be at least 19 years of age and have at least 5 actinic keratosis lesions in a 25 cm squared area. The lesions must be located on the face, scalp, forearms, or back of hands.
The study will involve the use of a topical gel that will be applied to only the targeted areas twice a day for 12 weeks, will last for 16 weeks, and require 6 visits to the office.

Wrinkle Study/Dermal Filler
