Skin care tip of the month: Moles that are flat and dark are the bad kind
As often as I repeat this to my patients, it is surprising to me that most folks have no idea that this is the case. In fact, most patients think that these are the 'safe' kind of moles since they are flat. This isn't the case, and typically, melanoma comes from these types of moles. While bleeding moles are certainly important, if you see a mole turn darker or get significantly larger in size over a short period of time, make an appointment to be seen, as this could be serious.

Banishing Pimples
For many years, I have been telling my patients that certain foods can cause acne - especially milk! The article linked here is yet another proof that dermatologists are beginning to believe this. While not all people are sensitive to milk, the hormones that it contains can play a significant role in acne and ought to be considered if you are finding more breakouts and tend to like drinking milk. New Study on Hidradenitis Suppurativa (Boils under the arms and in the groin area)
We are very excited to be recruiting patients for a clinical trial on a condition that, historically, has had poor responses to treatment. This condition is seen as boils that occur in the underarm area and groin, and tend to get worse with time. The drug in the study is an injectable medication. The study will be a 52-week study with 13 required visits to the office.
In order to qualify, you must be 19 years of age or older, be in good general health, and willing to come in for all required visits. You will receive compensation for your participation.

New Study on Topical Botox Competitor
This study is only available to patients who live in Omaha, NE.
It may sound too good to be true, but we are recruiting patients for a clinical trial on a new topical Botox competitor. This drug is applied to the skin just one time during the study. For this particular study we are testing two different doses of the study drug compared to a placebo.
In order to qualify for this study you will need to be between the ages of 30-60, have moderate to severe wrinkles around the eyes (crows feet) at rest and at smile, be in good general health, and willing to come in to the office 6 times over the course of 90 days.

Psoriasis Study
Dr. Schlessinger is conducting a study testing two topical medications vs. placebo to treat Psoriasis of the body. The study is fairly short, lasting only 28 days and consisting of only 3 visits during the course of this study.
In order to qualify for this study, you must be at least 19 years of age, be in good health, and must have at least 10% of your body surface area affected (trunks, arms, and legs).

Psoriasis Study
We will soon be recruiting patients for a psoriasis study, testing an injectable medication. Participants that qualify for this study will be exposed to three different dosing regimens during the trial. In order to qualify for this study, you must be at least 19 years of age, and you must have a moderate to severe diagnosis of chronic plaque type psoriasis for at least 6 months prior to starting the study.
Each patient will undergo a minimum of 15 study visits over approximately 49 weeks.
There will be compensation for participation in this study.

Fat-Dissolving Ultrasound Study
This study is only available to patients who live in Omaha, NE.
In the very near future Skin Specialists, P.C will be testing an Ultrasound Device that will treat adipose tissue (body fat) on the abdomen. The Ultrasound Device to be tested delivers High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) energy that can safely and effectively disrupt subcutaneous adipose tissue (body fat) to provide a non-invasive approach to treat adipose tissue.
Please note that if you are diabetic or have heart problems, you would not qualify for this study. You cannot have had any aesthetic procedures in the general region of treatment (abdomen), have had gastric bypass or lap-band surgery, and cannot be on prescription or over-the-counter weight loss medications.
This study will last for 24 weeks and require 8 visits to the office. In order to qualify for this study, you must be between the ages of 19-65, and participants must agree not to alter their normal and regular diet or exercise routines during the course of the study.
There will be compensation for participation in this study.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) Observational Study
Skin Specialists, P.C. is conducting a very important observational study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; and subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a $10.00 gift card after each subject interview.
