News from the American Academy of Dermatology
As in past years, several members of our office and LovelySkin.com attended the annual American Academy of Dermatology meeting this month. We saw several new procedures and products that we will be using in the office and website over the next several months. One thing that we can mention is that we have seen a dramatic increase in eyelash growth products, both prescription and non-prescription. The floor of the convention center had about 10 booths devoted to these products. Additionally, we are selling Latisse, the newest prescription product in our office (you must be a patient to obtain it from us, however). Why Hair Turns Gray
There is some very interesting recent research on why hair turns gray. It was found that individual hairs may get too much of one chemical, causing them to turn white. Additionally, this chemical may end up being useful to find causes for one disease, vitiligo, that turns the skin white. The research may also prove useful in skin cancer and melanoma research.

New Study on Topical Botox Competitor
Good news! We are recruiting patients for a clinical trial on a new topical Botox competitor. This drug is applied to the skin and has been tested on the underarms as a treatment for excessive sweating. We will only need 15 patients for this trial, so make sure to apply early if you are interested.

New Study on Hidradenitis Suppurativa (Boils under the arms and in groin area)
We are very excited to be recruiting patients for a clinical trial on a condition that has had very poor responses to prior treatments. The condition is seen as boils that occur in the underarm area and groin and tend to get worse with time. Many times it is seen in women with a concurrent condition called polycystic ovary syndrome. The drug that is going to be used is an injectable medication that has been used for psoriasis in other clinical trials. We will be starting this trial in late April, so sign up now to be included.

Skincare Tip of The Month: Take it easy in the sun!!
When going out for the first time in the sun, please be careful to avoid getting burned. At the last American Academy of Dermatology meeting, there were several meetings about melanoma and mole changes, and how they can appear after early sun exposure. One thing that is certain is that the more you are protected from the sun, the less likely you are to have moles that change.

We are still telling all of our patients the news about Raptiva, and the warnings about potential side effects of this drug. While there hasn't been a recall yet, it does seem imminent. Luckily, we have very few patients on this drug, but if you have any friends on it, you may want to tell them of the concerns.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) Observational Study
Skin Specialists PC, is conducting a very important observation study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years, and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a $10.00 gift card after each subject interview.

Sun Damaged Skin (Actinic Keratosis)
Dr. Schlessinger is now enrolling patients for an Actinic Keratosis/pre-cancerous lesions study. In order to qualify for this study, you must be at least 19 years of age and have at least 4 actinic keratosis lesions on the face or balding scalp in a 25 cm squared area.
The study will involve the use of a topical cream that will be applied to only the targeted areas twice a week for 16 weeks. The study will last for 24 weeks and require 4 visits to the office.

Wrinkle Study/Dermal Filler
In the near future Skin Specialists, PC will be conducting a dermal filler study for treatment of nasolabial folds (laugh lines). We are hoping to start the screening process in May! This study will last for 24 weeks and requires that you be seen for 7 follow up visits.

New Study on Topical Botox Competitor
It may sound too good to be true, but we are recruiting patients for a clinical trial on a new topical Botox competitor. This drug is applied to the skin just one time during the study. For this particular study we are testing two different doses of the study drug compared to a placebo. This study is very short, lasting only 28 days.
In order to qualify for this study, you will need to be between the ages of 30-55, have moderate to severe wrinkles around the eyes (crows feet), be in good general health, and be willing to come in to the office 4 times within the 28 day study.
