A Note From Dr. Schlessinger and Family, Back From Their Second Trip to Haiti
First, I would like to thank all of my patients and customers for their support of my family's second trip to Haiti to provide medical relief. Your prayers, assistance and wishes were very much appreciated and helped in so many ways. The Haitians were delighted with the clothing and books we brought from the Gretna High School Cheerleaders and Friedel Academy in Omaha. Ms. Schall's Aldrich Elementary School 5th grade class prepared Easter cards for the kids in the earthquake unit, they loved the cards. Mike Blatt of Future Foam in Council Bluffs, Iowa provided 14 egg crate mattresses which improved the lives of paraplegics, quadraplegics and amputees in the hospital enormously and Lynn Lamoureux/Option Care, donated medical supplies for our trip.
During the week that we were in Milot, Haiti at Hospital Sacre Coeur, from April 3rd to the 10th, we were extremely happy to see progress being made to discharge patients and return them to their previous lives when ready. The incredible spirit and devotion of the patients is summed up in this beautiful video of them singing while recovering (Click here to view the video). Crudem organization (www.Crudem.org) has worked tirelessly to provide a tent, money and supplies to those who are discharged, while setting up a prosthesis lab in tandem to form and fit limbs for those unfortunate individuals who were affected by the earthquake. The prosthesis unit should be up and operational within a few weeks!
While we were in Haiti, for our second time, we visited Port au Prince and an orphanage run by Faith Missions International. While none of the orphans located there were harmed by the earthquake, they are now living in tents alongside the unsafe building they once inhabited. There are 51 beautiful and loving children there who lost their parents in floods and the earthquake. We continue to work with this Omaha-based organization to improve their lives. While we were there, we met the courageous directors who had endured more than you could imagine (including physical threats and violence) to keep their kids safe. We also revisited Exilliene, one of our patients who is now discharged, who returned to her home in Port au Prince that is now condemned. While she is one of the lucky ones who returned, she lost her daughter in the earthquake and is now caring for an orphaned grandson, while living in a tent. She is managing all this while recovering from a painful, broken pelvis.
We continue to stay in touch with the many volunteers who go back, and will plan to return as soon as we are once again needed. Thank you so much for your support!

New Home Scheduled for LovelySkin!
Our good news is that LovelySkin has outgrown its home and will be moving to a new space consisting of 16,000 square feet and containing state of the art display and storage space. There will be a 3600 square foot showroom, with over 4000 products we currently carry and plenty of room for growth! Construction has begun on the remodeling of the previous Hearthstone Homes building across the street from Dr. Schlessinger's office at OakView Mall in Omaha, and we plan to occupy the space by October of this year. Severe Acne Study - New Form of Accutane
Dr. Schlessinger is recruiting subjects for a study testing an oral medication to treat severe acne to the face or trunk. All subjects will receive an active treatment. The study will last for six months and will involve at least nine visits to our office. In order to qualify, you must be 12-54 years of age, weigh less than 245 lbs., have not taken Accutane or any generic version of Accutane, and of course, have severe acne (at least 10 nodules on the face or trunk). Please note that if you fall between the ages of 12-17, you will also be required to have a DEXA (noninvasive bone density test) and X-Ray performed at on off-site location. There is absolutely no cost to participate in this study, and you will be compensated for your time and efforts.

Acne Study - Topical Foam Treatment for Acne
Skin Specialists, P.C. is currently screening for an acne study testing a topical foam medication vs. Placebo. The study will last for 12 weeks and will require the completion of 5 follow up visits. To qualify, you must be in good general health, be between the ages of 12-45, and have at least 20-25 inflammatory lesions and 30-125 non-inflammatory lesions on the face. Qualified participants will be compensated for their participation.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) Observational Study
Skin Specialists, P.C. is conducting a very important observation study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a check for $10.00 after each subject interview.

Rosacea Study - Cream for Rosacea
We are currently recruiting for a new Rosacea Study. The study will involve use of a topical foam vs. a placebo. The study is 12 weeks in duration, and there will be up to six required visits to the office. In order to qualify, you must be in general good health, be at least 19 years old, and must have 12-50 inflammatory lesions with persistent redness to the affected areas.
If you have ocular Rosacea, you would not qualify for this study.
You will be compensated for your participation.

Pediatric Scalp Psoriasis Study
Skin Specialists, P.C. is currently conducting a study testing a topical medication to treat scalp psoriasis in adolescent patients between the ages of 12-17. In order to qualify for this study, 20% of your scalp must be affected by Psoriasis. The study will last for 17 weeks and will require 5 follow up visits to our office.

Wrinkles Study - Topical Treatment
We are pleased to be included in a study testing a topical treatment to improve the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet). In order to qualify, you must be in good health, be between the ages of 19-65, must have moderate to severe wrinkles around the eyes, and must not have had any treatment with Botox or any other Botulinum Toxin products (i.e. Dysport) within 6 months prior to screening for the study.
We are planning on starting the screening process in late mid-May.

Toenail Fungus Study
In the near future we will be recruiting for a study testing a new topical medication to treat mild to moderate toenail fungus. In order to qualify for this study, you must be in good health and be between the ages of 19-75. You must have at least one of your great toenails affected (the nail must have 25%-65% involvement). You cannot have used oral treatments for toenail fungus within 6 months of screening, or topical medications for the treatment of toenail fungus within 1 month of screening.

Athlete’s Foot Study
Dr. Schlessinger will soon be conducting a study for patients with interdigital tinea pedis, also known as athlete’s foot. The study will involve the use of foam.
