Did Cleopatra use lead makeup to fight infections?
A new study released by the journal, Analytical Chemistry, gives a fascinating glimpse into ancient Egypt and how they may have fought eye infections by wearing a special kind of lead makeup. The makeup, containing laurionite, released nitric oxide and actually helped their immune defense system. While lead is known to be harmful in large doses, the dosages used may have been small enough to work for their health rather than against their health. Luckily, we now have many better options for eye makeup, many of which are included in our premier line, Colorescience.

What REALLY causes skin to look aged? We have the answer!
A recent study performed by Procter and Gamble showed that the dead giveaway of age is pigmentation, not necessarily wrinkles. The study used volunteers to guess the ages of women from 11 to 76 years of age. The most significant indicator of age proved to be pigmentation, blotches and spider veins on the face. Luckily, we are able to improve many of these indicators with simple skincare regimens, such as the Obagi line, and laser treatments such as the Fraxel or Starlux. Submental Fat Study (chin fat)
Dr. Schlessinger is recruiting subjects for a study testing an injectable medication to treat fat accumulation under the chin. The study will involve a series of injections to the chin and neck area. There will be a placebo component to this study, meaning some patients will receive active drug and some will receive an inactive drug (no active ingredients). You will have a 2 out of 3 chance of receiving the active drug. Your participation in the study will last approximately 36 weeks, with 15 required visits to our office. In addition to the 15 visits to our office, you will be required to get MRI’s performed at an off-site location three times during the course of the study.
In order to qualify for this study, you must be 19-65 years of age, in good general health, and have a stable body weight within the past six months. If you have had any intervention (i.e. liposuction, surgery, or lipolytic agents) to treat submental fat or trauma to the chin or neck areas, you would not qualify for this study.
There is absolutely no cost to participate in this study and you will be compensated for your time and efforts.

Sun-Damaged Skin (actinic keratosis)
We will soon be conducting a study for patients with actinic keratosis/pre-cancerous lesions to the face and/or balding scalp. The study will involve the use of a topical cream vs. a placebo, meaning some patients will receive active drug and some will receive an inactive drug (no active ingredients). Your participation in the study will last approximately 42 days, and you will be required to come to our office for four visits during the course of the study.
In order to qualify for this study, you must be at least 19 years of age and you must have at least five visible actinic keratoses on the face and/or balding scalp.
There is absolutely no cost to participate in this study and you will be compensated for your time and efforts.

Severe Acne Study
Dr. Schlessinger is recruiting subjects for a study testing an oral medication to treat severe acne to the face or trunk. All subjects will receive an active treatment. This study is a six month study and will involve at least nine visits to our office. In order to qualify for this study you must be 12-54 years of age, under 245 lbs., have not taken Accutane or any generic version of Accutane, and of course have severe acne (at least 10 nodules on the face or trunk). Please note that if you fall between the ages of 12-17 you will also be required to have a DEXA (noninvasive bone density test) and X-Ray performed at on off site location. There is absolutely no cost to participate in this study and you will be compensated for your time and efforts.

Acne Study
Dr. Schlessinger is currently screening for an acne study testing a topical foam medication vs. a placebo. The study will last for 12 weeks and will require 5 follow up visits. To qualify, you must be in good general health, be between the ages of 12-45, and have at least 20-25 inflammatory lesions and 30-125 non-inflammatory lesions on the face. Qualified participants will be compensated for their participation.

Acne Study
Dr. Schlessinger is currently recruiting subjects for an acne study that will involve testing two topical gel medications vs. a placebo. The study will last for 10 weeks and will require 4 office visits and one follow up phone call. To qualify, you must be in good general health, be between the ages of 12-65, and have 20 inflammatory and 25 non-inflammatory lesions on the face. You will be compensated for your participation.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) Observational Study
Skin Specialists, P.C. is conducting a very important observational study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by a mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a check for $10.00 after each subject interview.

Rosacea Study
We are currently recruiting for a new Rosacea Study. This study will involve a topical foam vs. a placebo. The study is 12 weeks in duration and there will be up to six required visits to the office. In order to qualify you must be in general good health, at least 19 years old, and must have 12-50 inflammatory lesions with persistent redness to the affected areas.
If you have ocular Rosacea you would not qualify for this study.
You will be compensated for your participation.
