Pool Chlorine May Interact with Sunscreen?
Recent research performed at the University of Illinois has shown that pools containing bromine as a disinfectant are more likely to lead to potential health hazards than those using a combination of chlorine and UV filtration. These hazards are increased when the bromine is exposed to sweat, oils (such as sunscreen) and body fluids, so it is important to ask if the pool where you swim is kept clean by bromine or better methods such as the combination chlorine/UV filter.

Pollution and Sun Damage
While it may be reasonable to think that pollution keeps the sun from damaging the skin, recent research from Germany has shown that it actually may contribute to MORE sun damage in the long run. This is one reason that it is important to wear sunscreen whenever you are out, especially if you are in a heavily polluted area.

Back to School?
School time is approaching and now is the best time to bring kids in or take stock of whether their acne is in need of dermatologic help. We often see parents whose kids will be having senior pictures soon or who want the kids to look their best on the first day of school. While we can do quite a bit in a short time, it is best to come in now if possible to give medications (especially for acne) time to work.

Dr. Schlessinger Quoted on MSNBC: What Your Hair Color Says About You
In an article about what your hair color says about you, Dr. Schlessinger was quoted on the national site, MSNBC.com. While the article quotes the president of LovelySkin.com saying how important it is to remember to cover heads when outside, the quote by Dr. Schlessinger was cut short. He also stressed the importance of protecting kids with blonde or red hair, especially while they are growing up, due to the significant increase in skin cancer potential for such kids.

Sunscreen and EWG Concerns
While the recent report by the Environmental Working Group has focused a much needed spotlight on sun safety, it has also resulted in fear about sunscreens. Basically, the report singles out various ingredients in sunscreens as being potentially unsafe, as revealed by animal tests. While we specifically look for products that don't animal test, this report alerts us to the results of these inadequate and cruel tests.
According to the president of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, Dr. Jeff Dover, the "research behind these allegations...has mostly been in lab animals and is dubious at best." For this reason, we are keeping a close watch on these stories as they unfold but we are not making any changes in the sunscreens we recommend as a site.
Dr. Schlessinger, President of LovelySkin.com, states that "the majority of the sunscreens contain these extra ingredients for one reason - safety and efficacy. Without these supposedly harmful ingredients, our sunscreens won't work all that well and more folks will end up getting skin cancer later on in life, so until we find out if the lab animal data is truthful I wouldn't abandon your sunscreen!"
