Safety of Retinyl Palmitate is Shown by Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute
In a study that was published in the prestigious Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, it was shown that Retinyl Palmitate is safe as an additive ingredient in sunscreen. It had earlier been questioned by the Environmental Work Group. While many sunscreen manufacturers have taken it out of their products, it appears to be safe based on the online article published in early August. We continue to follow this issue carefully and will report any new findings on this and other sunscreen ingredients to our patients and LovelySkin customers.

Color of Beer and Psoriasis, New Studies on Psoriasis
While it may seem like an odd finding, research at Harvard University has shown that dark beer and interestingly, not light beer, wine or hard liquor, seems to increase the risk of psoriasis development. The thought is that dark beer contains gluten and this ingredient may lead to psoriasis development. Gluten and dark beer, in particular, may be items to avoid if you or a family member/friend develop psoriasis or suffer from it.
We are currently recruiting for a study on psoriasis and will be entering patients into another psoriasis study shortly as well, but neither of these studies involve alcohol intake. If you are interested, please write to our study department at Study@LovelySkin.com.

Dr. Schlessinger Quoted in the Wall Street Journal
Dr. Schlessinger was recently quoted in the Wall Street Journal in an article about the success of the maker of Botox®, Allergan. Dr. Schlessinger's comments included information about programs that he believes contributed to this maker's success as well as the Dysport 'Love it or Leave it' program, which has been a great success for Dysport. Pediatric Acne Study for Patients 9-11 years of Age
Dr. Schlessinger is currently screening patients for a pediatric acne study. The medication being tested is a topical medication vs. Placebo. In order to qualify subjects must be 9-11 years of age and have a minimum of 20 acne bumps (Non-inflammatory/Inflammatory) on the face. This study will last for 12 weeks and will require 7 follow up visits to our office. Qualified participants will be compensated for their participation.

Psoriasis Study
Dr. Schlessinger is currently screening patients for a psoriasis study. This study is testing an injectable medication for patients with plaque psoriasis. This study will last for 32 to 40 weeks and will require 13 follow up visits to our office. In order to qualify for this study you must be at least 19 years old, must have a diagnosis of chronic psoriasis for at least 6 months prior to starting the study, and have at least 10% Body Surface Area covered with psoriasis.

Toenail Fungus Study
Skin Specialists, PC is currently conducting a study testing a topical medication to treat mild to moderate toenail fungus. In order to qualify for this study you must be in good health and between the ages of 19-75. You must have at least one of your great toenails affected (the nail must have 25%-65% involvement). You can not have used oral treatments for toenail fungus within 6 months of screening for this study or used a topical medication for the treatment of toenail fungus within 1 month of screening.

Submental Fat Study (Underneath the Chin)
In the near future Skin Specialists, PC will be conducting a study for submental fat. Qualified participants will receive one treatment underneath the chin and will be monitored in the office for 8 hours post injection. An in office follow up visit will be conducted the following day (24 hours post injection) and a follow up phone call will be scheduled 7 days post injection. In order to qualify for this study, you must be 19-65 years of age, females may not be pregnant, nursing or planning a pregnancy, you must be in good general health, and must have a presence of sufficient submental fat under the chin at the time of screening. There is absolutely no cost to participate in this study and you will be compensated for your time and efforts.

Severe Acne Study - New Form of Accutane
Dr. Schlessinger is recruiting subjects for a study testing an oral medication to treat severe acne to the face and trunk. All subjects will receive an active treatment. This study is a six month study and will involve at least nine visits to our office. In order to qualify for this study you must be 12-54 years of age, less than 245 lbs., have not taken Accutane or any generic version of Accutane, and of course have severe acne (at least 10 nodules on the face or trunk). Please note that if you fall between ages 12-17 you will also be required to have a DEXA (noninvasive bone density test) and X-Ray performed at an off site location. There is absolutely no cost to participate in this study and you will be compensated for your time and efforts.

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) Observational Study
Skin Specialists, PC is conducting a very important observation study to assess the long-term safety of Protopic ointment 0.03% or 0.1% in the treatment of subjects with eczema (atopic dermatitis). The study will last for 10 years; subjects will be required to come to our office each year for assessment of their atopic dermatitis and for a general physical exam. A skin check will be performed once every two years and there will be two interviews, either by phone or by mailed questionnaire.
In order to qualify, you/your child must have been exposed to Protopic by the age of 16. You/your child must have used the Protopic to treat the eczema (atopic dermatitis) for 6 weeks, either continuously or intermittently.
Subjects will receive a check for $10.00 after each subject interview.

New Eyelash Growth Study Planned
We are currently looking for volunteers for a study on eyelash growth products. In order to participate in this study you must be a woman between the ages of 19 and 55 and have no evidence of eye problems or eye diseases. Additionally, you must not be contemplating any surgeries around this area.

Pediatric Scalp Psoriasis
Skin Specialists, PC is currently conducting a study testing a topical medication to treat scalp psoriasis in adolescent patients between the ages of 12-17. In order to qualify for this study 20% of your scalp must be affected by psoriasis. This study will last for 17 weeks and will require 5 follow up visits to our office.
