Medicines and the Sun
Many patients are 'burned' (literally) by going out in the sun while taking various medications. Please be aware that there are many medications, such as sulfa drugs, minocycline (and Solodyne), tetracycline and accutane that can increase sun sensitivity, leading to a burn. Many other drugs such as Naproxen, Anaprox, Naprelan, Naprosyn and Aleve that can lead to a burn.

If you are taking one of these drugs, be careful! We have a great new sunscreen from Obagi, the Obagi NuDerm Sun Shield SPF 50, that goes on clear without any problems and lasts much longer than other available sunscreens. If you are interested in protecting your skin, this product has both Zinc oxide 10.5%, and Octinoxate. Shop Now!

Washing Your Face - Clarisonic Brush System

For an article that appeared in Seventeen Magazine, I was recently asked how best to wash your face. Interestingly, not many people actually get advice on this important 'how to' question, so I am including a brief excerpt of my suggestions:

Use lukewarm or at most warm water. Avoid very hot water.

Put water on your hands and face first. Then take the cleanser, suds it up on your palm, put it on your face and work it in gently. Avoid a washcloth.

Make sure to rinse with copious amounts of water, then pat dry.

If you wish to scrub, consider the Clarisonic brush system, which is great for people with blackheads and whiteheads.

We are offering a free Botox or Dysport treatment for anyone who has their SmartLipo procedure performed in May. That is up to a $375 value, so call us to schedule or set up a free consultation now!

Dr. Schlessinger in InStyle, Women's Wear Daily Spotlights LovelySkin Retail Store!

InStyle Magazine mentioned LovelySkin in its most recent issue highlighting 150 Best Beauty Buys! This article discusses our favorite products, including Neocutis Perle, a non-hydroquinone for brown spots. View it here!

Additionally, our new LovelySkin retail store was spotlighted in Women's Wear Daily as a new type of store for cosmeceuticals. We are thrilled that the store received national attention!

New Form of Retin A at Skin Specialists

There is a new form of Retin A, produced by the manufacturer of Kinerase, that we are carrying at our office currently (in addition to Refissa). Kinerase Tretinoin is the 0.5% strength, but is carried in an emollient gel base that is very well tolerated and excellent for acne prone individuals. Interestingly, we actually did the clinical studies on this drug several years ago when it was called by its test name, Col-RA.

This form of Retin A costs $60 for a 20 gram tube and $115 for two 20 gram tubes. If you are using either Retin A or Refissa and are acne prone/sensitive, this may be a good option. It is prescription only, so if you are considering it, you can tell the nurses at the time of your appointment with either Dr. Schlessinger or Jackie or when you are in the spa. However, since it is a cosmetic formulation it is not eligible for drug plan coverages. This offer is only available at our Omaha, NE clinic.
New Studies at Advanced Skin Research Center

We are now recruiting for studies on new drugs for the blushing form of rosacea, acne, psoriasis, toenail fungus and precancerous lesions. The studies fill up very quickly, so if you or your family member suffers from one of these conditions and wish to be in a clinical trial, go to www.LovelySkin.com/study or call us at 402-334-7546 to find out more information or register for a trial.
