NEW FixMySkin Healing Balms Are Here!
The NEW FixMySkin Healing Balms have arrived!
These innovative healing balms, developed by Dr. Schlessinger and his son, Daniel,
help solve several common skin issues. The medicated
FixMySkin Healing Balms contain 1% hydrocortisone and help repair and treat
dry skin, chapped lips, psoriasis, eczema, insect bites, poison ivy, seborrheic
dermatitis and allergic skin reactions to cosmetics and other products. The special
formulation allows the balm to glide onto skin easily, yet it holds up in higher
temperatures, so it won’t melt in your pocket. They’re available in a subtle vanilla
scent or fragrance-free option, and they come in 3 convenient sizes: a lip
balm, face balm in a small jar, and larger body balm stick–all 3 are small
enough to fit into your pocket, purse or tote.
The healing balms are also available without hydrocortisone in the
LovelySkin Healing Balm line. The unmedicated balms protect and soothe dry,
cracked skin on the lips, face, elbows, heels and more. They also come in 3 sizes
and vanilla and fragrance-free options.
These balms make great additions to your winter skin care regimen. Buy one for yourself
and give one as a gift! Or, choose the value packs, and get all 3 sizes. They make
excellent stocking stuffers too.

amazing before and after photos that show you how well these balms work!

Cosmetic Surgery Forum starts Dec. 1!
The staff of LovelySkin and Skin Specialists is excited that
Dr. Schlessinger will be moderating the Cosmetic Surgery Forum for a third year
in a row. Started and facilitated by Dr. Schlessinger, the Cosmetic Surgery Forum
is a multi-specialty educational symposium that covers the latest in dermatology
and cosmetic surgery. He created the symposium as a way to train the current and
new generations of cosmetic surgeons. Over the course of three days, dermatologists,
cosmetic surgeons, beauty editors, residents and fellows will learn about many different
facets of cosmetic surgery through demonstrations, discussions and lectures.
Dr. Schlessinger is a firm believer that continuing education is an integral part
of the practice of cosmetic dermatology and cosmetic surgery and is proud to be
offering this unique educational opportunity for a third year. He, along with his
dedicated staff, have put in many hours and significant energy into making the Third
Annual Cosmetic Surgery Forum the best year yet.
“Dr. Schlessinger has created a unique and very valuable educational experience
for the dermatologist with aesthetic interests. The exchanges are honest and valuable
and I always return with pearls that I can immediately implement in my practice,”
says Jo Bohannon, MD, a previous Cosmetic Surgery Forum attendee.
The Cosmetic Surgery Forum will take place on December 1 through December 4 at the
Palazzo Hotel Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Physicians and editors from
around the country attend this forum. Beauty editors attending this year’s event
come from many prestigious publications such as Bobby Schuessler from Lucky, Elizabeth
Dunlap from RealBeauty.com, Clarissa Cruz from O, The Oprah Magazine, Kaitlyn Dreyling

Up–to– the Minute Medical News
Botox for Hair Loss?
It’s well known that Botox is a treatment to erase fine lines
and wrinkles. It’s also been studied and used for treatment of headaches and hyperhidrosis,
but hair loss treatment might be added to the list. Botox injections into the scalp
for the treatment of hair loss was the subject of an open-label pilot study performed
by the Crown Institute. Forty of the 50 patients completed the
study, and researchers found that mean hair counts increased 18% over the
course of 48 weeks. Additionally, the researchers noted that hair loss was significantly
reduced by 39%. The study patients noted increased hair growth during the study
period as well.
In this study, Botox was used as a treatment for male pattern baldness, also known
as androgenic alopecia. This type of baldness in males is hereditary and related
to hormones. The pattern of hair loss is evident by noting a receding hair line
and hair thinning on the crown of the head. It is proposed that the Botox treatment
causes the scalp muscles to relax, thus enhancing blood flow to the area around
the hair follicles. The increased blood flow allows the follicles to resume their
growth rather than shrink and fall out. This mechanism is basically the same as
that for popular hair loss treatments such as Rogaine and Propecia. Both medications
work to stimulate the hair follicles to grow and to slow hair loss.
While Dr. Schlessinger has never used Botox for the treatment of hair loss in his
patients, he does think it’s an interesting study. “I’d recommend Propecia or Rogaine
for hair loss treatment, as these are much less expensive than Botox and have been
proven to work, but it will be interesting to see if Botox treatments pan out in
the future,” states Dr. Schlessinger. He also recommends non-prescription hair loss
treatments such as
Hair by Revitalash and
Jan Marini Hair Revitalizing Conditioner to his patients.

Oral Antibiotics for Acne May Cause Sore Throats
A recent study in the
Archives of Dermatology found that some oral antibiotics used to treat acne
may be causing sore throats. The study found that “pharyngitis was 4.34 times more
likely among college students taking oral antibiotics for acne than among those
not taking the drugs”. The study covered the use of tetracyclines, but researchers
didn’t find any more bacteria in the antibiotic group, suggesting that the rise
in sore throats, or pharyngitis, is not due to antibiotic resistance.
Dr. Schlessinger believes there may be another reason for the rise of pharyngitis
in acne patients. “There is a possibility that these individuals were actually showing
a side effect from taking their medications before bedtime and without enough food
or water. Medications such as Minocin and tetracycline come in a capsule form most
of the time and if that is ‘stuck’ in the esophagus, it can cause irritation and
symptoms much like that of a sore throat.”
Additionally, Dr. Schlessinger also points out that tetracycline is no longer commonly
used for the treatment of acne. He recommends using a proper skin care regimen to
help prevent acne before turning to prescription drugs. Start your journey to healthy,
clear skin with Dr. Schlessinger’s signature and recommended skin care regimen,

Using the Right Products for Hair Does Make a Difference
We’ve all heard of the many different types of hair, such as
fine, dry, oily, curly, and so on, and the plethora of hair care products for each
type. There are also products specifically made for color-treated hair. Are all
these types of products necessary to care for our hair? They may not be. According
to a recent report from researchers at Procter & Gamble, the only thing that matters
when it comes to hair type is thickness and dye. The most significant differences
are between thick, fine and color-treated hair.
Hair is naturally coated with a protective layer of oil that repels water. When
dye is applied to hair, it strips away this protective layer, causing the hair to
become attracted to water, so that many chemicals we apply to our hair for shine,
volume and texture do not stick to the hair. If you dye your hair, then you need
to use a product specifically designed for color-treated hair. These products will
help keep your hair healthy and shiny. We recommend using a shampoo and conditioner
made for dyed hair – in particular, one of our favorites is the
Okara line of hair care products from Rene Furturer.
The same goes for fine and thick hair. Fine hair also attracts water because of
its thin protective layer, and thick hair needs a higher-powered ingredient because
it has a larger layer to penetrate. For fine hair, we recommend
Klorane Shampoo with Almond Milk and for thick hair, we recommend
Klorane Shampoo with Papyrus Milk. We also recommend a dry shampoo for
use on all hair types, including permed hair; the dry shampoos refresh and revolumize
hair while on-the-go, and best of all – no water needed! Try
Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk Aerosol or
Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo.
