NEW FixMySkin Healing Balms Coming Soon!
LovelySkin will soon introduce the NEW FixMySkin Healing Balms, an innovative balm developed by Dr. Schlessinger and his son, Daniel, to help solve several common skin problems. These medicated balms for the lips, body and face contain 1% hydrocortisone, making them a go-to remedy for treating dry skin, chapped lips, psoriasis, eczema, insect bites, poison ivy, seborrheic dermatitis and allergic skin reactions to cosmetics and other products.
Hydrocortisone, the basic ingredient of the FixMySkin balms, has chemical properties that help heal rather than merely moisturize the skin, and the special formulation allows for a higher level of effectiveness than other ordinary hydrocortisone creams. In addition, a unique combination of waxes and hydrocortisone results in better improvement for dry skin conditions, and it won’t melt in your pocket.
The FixMySkin balms are available in subtle vanilla and a pleasant flavorless option and come in three convenient sizes for easy transport in a pocket, purse or tote bag. Additionally, we will have balms without hydrocortisone in the LovelySkin line as well. The product, which is clearing the final phases of development, will be available in December 2011, just in time for the winter months!
For more information and to read the story about the balms’ development, go to www.LovelySkin.com/FMS. |

Up–to– the Minute Medical News
New Sunscreen Rules and Cosmetics
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently in the process of changing its SPF labeling standards for over-the-counter products, including cosmetics and moisturizers, that contain sunscreens. The new labeling requires that products pass a “broad spectrum” test, indicating that the product protects against both UVA rays and UVB rays. UVA rays are known to contribute to skin cancer and early signs of skin aging, and UVB rays are known to cause sunburn.
For the next 6 months to 2 years, though sun protection ingredients may be included in a product’s formulation, until manufacturers have new stock that is approved under the new FDA regulations, the manufacturers are unable to declare an SPF on the packaging of the product. However, even if the manufacturer cannot claim an SPF on the label of their product, the same SPF ingredients generally remain in the product.
A few of our favorite cosmetics and moisturizers with sunscreen include Oxygenetix Oxygenating Moisturizer, Oxygenetix Oxygenating Foundation, Colorescience Pro Sunforgettable Brush SPF 30,Colorescience Pro Sunforgettable Primer SPF 30, and Colorescience Pro Sunforgettable Lip Shine SPF 35.
If you have concerns about the SPF in your cosmetics or moisturizers, please contact us.

No-Needle Botox, researched by Dr. Schlessinger
A new study presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (one that Dr. Schlessinger participated in) has shown that a topical botulinum toxin gel, currently being called RT001, significantly improved the appearance of crow’s-feet, in 89% of patients in the study. It is not available to the public yet, as it is still undergoing FDA testing.
This new product is a major breakthrough, as it’s not injected into the skin with a needle like traditional Botox or Dysport--it’s applied topically to the skin. The gel, which is applied in a physician’s office, works by penetrating the layers of the skin and relaxing the underlying muscles, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. The gel is then wiped off with a proprietary cleanser.
This alternative way to reduce wrinkles could greatly increase the numbers of people who want Botox results without the needles. In addition, results showed that the topical gel treatment lasted about 4 months.
Though the gel is still in clinical trials and is not yet approved by the FDA, it may be a jumping-off point for people who don’t like needles and don’t mind somewhat less activity than the injectables provide.
Dr. Schlessinger says, "It is exciting to have been a part of this trial and the development of this new treatment. Additionally, I love the fact that we have access to most of these new clinical trials here in Omaha. We are actively looking for volunteers for a new application of this drug for underarm sweating. The trials should begin early next year, so sign up early to be a part!"

Anti-Gray Hair Pill – Is It Safe?
Gray hair is often viewed as a sign of aging, and many people take part in the ancient practice of hair dying to rid of those grays. However, a new way to keep those grays away is on the horizon. A pill that could stave off gray hair may be available as soon as 2015. For more than a decade, cosmetic company L’Oreal has been researching a pill that would prevent hair from turning gray. The new pill contains an undisclosed fruit extract that mimics an enzyme that protects production of pigmentation, the process that keeps hair its natural color. The pill would prevent oxidative stress, a process that causes hair color to fade from its natural color to gray.
However, if your hair is already gray, you’re out of luck. L’Oreal researchers say the pill has to be taken every day for at least 10 years prior to any hair turning gray, and it will have to be taken every day for the rest of your life to keep those grays away.
Is a pill really the answer to keeping gray hair away? Maybe not. Dr. Schlessinger is concerned about the long-term safety risks this pill could cause to the body, and since most people don’t know when their hair might start turning gray, if ever, it may not be worth the risk.
Dr. Schlessinger is carefully watching the development of this pill and states "there will be further research on this and I hope this will turn out, but my guess is that it won’t."

New Study Links Tanning Bed Use to Increased Skin Cancer Risk
Tanning beds have long been suspected as a risk of causing cancer, and there’s new research to support this. A study presented by Harvard researchers at the 10th American Association of Cancer Research International Conference has shown a link between tanning bed usage and deadly skin cancers. For 20 years, the researchers tracked tanning bed usage in more than 73,000 nurses. They also followed overall tanning bed usage in relation to basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma--all types of skin cancer.
Researchers found that for every 4 uses of a tanning bed, the risk for basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas increased by 15% and the risk for melanoma –the most deadly skin cancer—increased by 11%. They also noted that tanning bed usage at a younger age, during high school and college, increased cancer risk.
"This is something I have been saying for years. Hopefully, people will finally take notice," states Dr. Schlessinger.
Still want that bronze glow without the risk of cancer? LovelySkin carries a full range of sunless tanning products. Some of our favorites are Jane Iredale Tantasia Self-Tanner and Phytomer Sun Radiance Self-Tanning Cream Face and Body.
