Skin Cancer Up–to– the Minute Medical News

Skin cancer detection device on its way to FDA approval

A new medical device called MelaFind is on its way to FDA approval. The MelaFind device is intended to identify melanoma, a serious and deadly form of skin cancer, usually caused by too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. According to estimates by the National Cancer Institute, more than 70,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2011 and more than 8000 deaths will occur due to this cancer.

The device uses a camera to take a photo of the skin lesion, which a computer analyzes based on an algorithm developed from treatments of thousands of patients. The FDA has sent the device’s manufacturer, Mela Science, a letter stating the device is “approvable” pending some final negotiations. The letter is based on 7 years of scrutiny of the device’s safety and effectiveness by the FDA.

Dr. Schlessinger has some caveats about the use of this technology at the present time.

"The reason for this is that it lulls the patient into a potentially dangerous situation where the 'machine' is felt to be infallible and able to diagnose a 'melanoma'. The problem is that the 'machine' is only as good as the person who is looking at the body and examining the moles. If the doctor (or more likely nurse, in this situation) is incompetent or simply doesn't see a suspicious mole, the machine is never going to find it."

Dr. Schlessinger says this machine isn’t 100% accurate, so there’s a good chance many melanomas will be missed by the device, creating a false sense of security that "there’s no melanoma present."

"Even great dermatologists have huge discussions and debates over what exactly a melanoma is, as this is NOT a black and white diagnosis. To think that a machine can take all the guesswork out of this thorny problem is both ridiculous and terrifying," states Dr. Schlessinger.

For an accurate diagnosis of melanoma, you should always consult a dermatologist. Early detection is key for the early diagnosis of skin cancer. Any irregular moles or lesion should be checked by a dermatologist on a regular basis.

Dr. Schlessinger and Skin Specialists are experts in mole evaluation and skin cancer evaluation and treatment. To set up an appointment for an early detection evaluation either email us for an appointment or give us a call at 402-334-SKIN (7546) or toll free at 1-800-757-7546.

Tattoo ink may contain chemicals toxic to your health

Although most people already know about the risks involved with receiving a tattoo, including infection, allergic reaction and scars, an estimated 45 million Americans have at least one tattoo. However, it’s not just allergic reactions tattoo recipients need to worry about -- new research has found that toxic chemicals are present in many tattoo inks, including metals, phthalates and hydrocarbons that are carcinogens and endocrine disrupters.

One of the chemicals found in black tattoo ink, benzo(a)pyrene, has been found to cause skin cancer in lab animals. Research has already shown that the tattoo inks can migrate to lymph nodes. Dyes and inks used in tattoo ink do not need to be approved by the FDA, and it remains very difficult to know the exact composition of dyes and inks used in tattooing. The FDA has begun more rigorous testing on tattoo ink to answer fundamental questions about tattoos and the health risks associated with the ink.

Dr. Schlessinger says that this issue is concerning to him because so many tattoos are out there already and every day the number increases.

"Perhaps the best take home message is that if you have allergies or eczema, tattoos may be a poor choice for you. Additionally, if you have a history of cancer or immune diseases in the family, tattoos should be lower on the ‘must do’ list," Dr. Schlessinger advises.

However, if you are going to get a tattoo, Dr. Schlessinger recommends getting it on an area that is easily hidden.

"Always remember that it is much easier and less costly to put on a tattoo than to remove it. While laser treatments can work on many tattoos, costs can be extremely high – even into the thousands of dollars – to remove them, so think carefully before having a tattoo!"

If you have a tattoo you’d like removed, Dr. Schlessinger offers consultations and treatments for tattoo removal. To read more about the hazards of tattoo ink, check out the article Are Tattoos Toxic?

Liposuction can reduce triglyceride levels Liposuction can reduce triglyceride levels

According to research presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting, liposuction may “reduce harmful fat circulating in the blood.” The fat that circulates in the blood is called triglycerides, and high triglyceride levels can raise the risk of heart disease and metabolic syndrome. In the study, researchers found that people who had high triglyceride levels experienced a 43% reduction in triglycerides 3 months after liposuction.

"This is good news, but we still want our patients to watch their diets before and after liposuction," states Dr. Schlessinger.

Now is the perfect time to get liposuction. Not only will liposuction help you shed a few pounds before you see your friends and family during the holiday season, but it can also benefit your health. To learn more or to set up an appointment for liposuction performed by Dr. Schlessinger, email us or call us at 1-800-757-7546. Also visit our cosmetic surgery page for more information.
