Body Piercings: Avoid Infection & Other Complications

Body piercings can be a source of infections and other possible health risks, according to a recent study in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology.

Approximately 20% of piercings become infected, but the study’s comprehensive health exam did identify that precautions should be followed if possible. Body piercers are encouraged to look at their medical and social history to identify conditions that may predispose them to complications and health risks, such as asthma, allergies, scarring, or preexisting infections.

Improper care can lead to serious complications. Infections, although treatable, are the most common complication, followed by allergic reactions, blood loss, scarring and interference with medical procedures, such as X-ray or ultrasound. Some piercings can even lead to viral hepatitis, toxic shock syndrome, endocarditis (inflammation of the heart), brain abscesses or death.

FDA Face Cream Warning FDA Issues Warning about Face Creams Containing Mercury

The FDA has recently warned the public of the danger of imported skin creams containing unsafe levels of mercury. These creams have been brought into the country through questionable channels and are being sold illegally on store shelves, often in Latino, Asian, African or Middle Eastern neighborhoods, the FDA said.

The FDA encourages consumers avoid any unlabeled skin care product and stop using any products that mention mercury, mercuric salts, cinnabar, calomel, or mercuris chloride. If you suspect you've used a skin care product that contains mercury, wash your hands and the area immediately and call your doctor or local health department.

Dr. Schlessinger diligently makes sure that all of our face creams meet the utmost safety guidelines. Some of his favorite face creams include SkinMedica Dermal Repair Cream and Neocutis Bio-Cream Bio-Restorative Cream with PSP.

Ask Dr. S: What is the best makeup?

There are hundreds of options in makeup, but what is the best makeup? We asked LovelySkin.com’s founder and president, board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Schlessinger.

Dr. Schlessinger says that it comes down to personal preference, but his patients and LovelySkin.com customers tend to prefer mineral based makeup such as Colorescience, glo minerals and jane iredale or Oxygenetix breathable makeup.

“Mineral cosmetics tend to cause fewer problems with acne and it goes on with a nice finish. Natural mineral makeup is a fast growing segment of makeup, as it is usually made from natural ingredients and works on all skin types,” says Dr. Schlessinger. “Now we also have Oxygenetix which allows the skin to breathe so you can still get great coverage with fewer breakouts.”

Mineral cosmetics consist of finely powdered minerals that provide a uniform coverage over your skin. Many mineral cosmetics also contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, two physical sun blocks to protect your skin from environmental damage. Most mineral makeup is also natural mineral makeup, meaning it is free of preservatives, parabens, artificial dyes and fragrances. Because of these key properties, mineral cosmetics are less likely to irritate sensitive skin.
