In recent years, the safety of parabens has been called into question due to studies suggesting it may have carcinogenic properties. Parabens are the most widely used preservatives in cosmetics, skin and hair care products and extend the shelf life of products while preventing bacteria growth.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not warn people against the use of parabens and, in a official post, declared that at this time, “there is no reason for consumer to be concerned about the use of cosmetics containing parabens.” But since a conclusive test and determination of their safety has yet to be revealed, there has been a boom in paraben-free alternatives.

Many people are avoiding products that have this ingredient in them because they believe they may disrupt hormones or mimic estrogen, which is thought to be a factor in breast cancer development in some women.
