Para-aminobenzoic acid, commonly known as PABA, was the first true sunscreen on the market. Launched during the 70s, it has dominated sunscreen sales until recent years, when it was found to cause an allergic reaction in many people. The use of PABA has been reduced due to such harmful interactions, particularly its effects on sensitive skin, and because of studies suggesting that it can lead to cancer.
