Gluten-Free Products Gluten–Free and Other Products Are Now Easier to Find at!

In addition to having easy access to products that are paraben–free, PABA–free, oil–free and fragrance–free, now you can also find gluten–free products quickly and easily at!

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and other related grains. Some people experience serious health problems when they digest gluten, either because of intolerance or celiac disease, a genetic immune disorder that causes symptoms ranging from weight loss to rashes.

Recently, attention to gluten intolerance and the popularity of gluten–free diets have caused consumers a great deal of concern and have increased demands for gluten–free versions of food, beauty and skincare products. Doctors suggest that anyone with celiac disease avoid from products containing gluten, but beauty and skincare products are often cited as safe so long as they aren’t applied to the lips or mouth area, where they could potentially be ingested by someone with extreme gluten sensitivity. However, many individuals choose to err on the side of caution and avoid all gluten–based products.

The entire EltaMD line is gluten-free and many others are close to gluten-free as well! Check out all of our gluten-free products here:

Rare bacterium found in tattoo salons:

Dr. Schlessinger has stated his concerns about tattoo parlors and cleanliness on several occasions in this newsletter, but a new report of skin infections from tattoos is now supporting these fears. A rare skin infection due to the bacteria Mycobacterium haemophilum, which is in the same family as bacteria that cause tuberculosis and leprosy, has surfaced in two healthy individuals who have recently been tattooed, according to new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC wants to increase awareness of this skin infection, which is caused by a hard-to-treat bacterium, so doctors can be on the lookout for symptoms.

Caffeine may aid in the prevention of skin cancer:

Caffeine may be the newest ingredient in the fight for skin cancer prevention. According to a recent Rutgers University study, skin care products containing caffeine may help to prevent UV damage from developing into skin cancer. Based on recent experiments with mice, scientists believe caffeine serves as a sunscreen, absorbing UV rays and reducing the risk of damaged, cancerous cells.

We sell numerous products containing this beneficial ingredient, from Clark’s Botanicals Anti-Puff Eye Cream to RevaleSkin, a line containing CoffeeBerry. In addition to RevaleSkin’s very high level of antioxidants and caffeine, this study indicates even more benefits of this line of products. You can also find our full list of caffeine-containing products at

Hand Sanitizers vs. Soap and Water

Hand Sanitizers Can’t Stand Up to Soap and Water!

Hand sanitizers are not a substitute for old-fashioned soap and hot water, according to an article in the Montreal Gazette.

"I have always felt this way," Dr. Schlessinger said. "While it is convenient to use these and better than nothing, it clearly isn't the same thing as washing your hands with soap."

The article referenced a US study that demonstrated long-term care facilities were more likely to see an outbreak of norovirus, which causes a severe gastrointestinal illness, if their staff used hand sanitizers over traditional hand-washing.

Fight unwanted germs and bacteria with a solid bar of hand soap, like Dermalogica’s Clean Bar. If you’re on the go and hand sanitizers are all you have access to, then we’d recommend Eminence’s Organic Tea Tree and Mint Hand Cleanser.

FDA Revises Warning for Propecia

The FDA has recently revised the warning and precautions information for the class of drugs that includes Propecia (generic name finasteride), which is used to treat hair loss. The class of drugs is currently being investigated for a possible link to high–grade prostate cancer and breast cancer in men. While no conclusive data have been published, if you are currently taking Propecia, we encourage you to perform a self–exam and cease use if any lumps or abnormalities are seen/felt in the breast area.

"While my opinion is that the jury is still out, it does change my approach to using it in women," Dr. Schlessinger said. "While I hadn't encouraged women to use it, some clinicians used it on female patients who benefited from it. I wouldn't recommend it to women at this time, given the issues we are now hearing about. Additionally, when it comes to men, I would weigh the options. We will be having discussions with all our patients over the next few years based on this data, and will carefully watch and inform our patients via this newsletter about any new studies or information regarding this topic."
