Shield Skin Against Blue Light with Dermablend and SkinCeuticals

We’ve all noticed the recent uptick in products designed to protect us from blue light. From blue light filters on our phones and computers to blue light glasses, there’s no shortage of products available to protect you. But what is blue light, and why should we add products with blue light filters to our beauty routines?

We’re here with some of our favorite products to shield skin against blue light, plus a quick breakdown on why it’s an important part of your skin care regimen.

What is blue light?

Blue light is an artificially emitted visible light. Visible light, or light we’re able to see, is comprised of different colored rays from red to purple. When these lights combine, they form the white light we often see emitted by smart phones, electronic devices, LED lights and more.

Inside of that white light are blue light rays, which show the highest energy of all visible light—comparable to that of UV rays. While blue light doesn’t penetrate the skin as deeply as UV rays and has not been linked to skin cancer, it has been shown to cause free radical damage, which can lead to dark spots and premature aging. We spoke with Dr. Joel Schlessinger, board-certified dermatologist and LovelySkin CEO, about the effects of blue light on the skin:

“There is evidence in dermatological literature that topical skin care products containing iron oxide can help protect skin against the effects of blue light. Additionally, this evidence shows bare skin exposed to blue light exhibits pigmentation that is immediate and lasting. To combat the effects of blue light, many skin care products are utilizing iron oxide for an additional layer of protection.”

Blue Light Products You Can Add to Your Regimen Right Now

Many products are touting blue light protection, but the best way to protect your skin remains the same—sunscreen. SkinCeuticals award-winning sunscreens provide protection against premature aging and skin cancer. They are clinically tested, broad-spectrum formulas that feature UV filters for skin of all types, tones and lifestyles. By choosing a sunscreen that also offers blue light protection, you can double-down and ensure your skin is protected from visible light.
