Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Daniel Schlessinger discusses three common types of skin pigmentation and discoloration.
Hyperpigmentation is an umbrella term referring to skin discoloration caused by excess melanin production. It can be caused by sun damage, hormonal changes or inflammation and appear on any place on the body.
Melasma is a common type of hyperpigmentation, often called “pregnancy mask,” that affects women undergoing hormonal changes. Melasma on the cheeks, forehead or arms can be targeted with topical treatments or medications with the guidance of a board-certified dermatologist.
Freckles, sun spots, pigmented seborrheic keratoses or lentigines are common age-related discolorations caused by sun exposure and natural aging. Freckles or dark spots may be mistaken for many other types of discolorations and sometimes even skin cancer, so it’s essential to see an expert for treatment.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation takes place when a pimple, scrape, rash, cut or burn leaves a red or darkened patch of skin behind. Sun exposure can increase this type of discoloration, and it can stick around longer in deeper skin tones.
