Ahimsa means non-violence, non-injurious. Why does that word apply to a facial scrub? The answer lies in my past experiences with numerous scrubs and exfoliants, which would inevitably irritate, or at times, actually injure, my complexion. I learned to avoid scrubs because, frankly, doesn't 'to scrub' imply vigorous cleansing, or even, scouring and abrading? I have some unlovely skin spots with tiny little red broken capillaries - visual testimony of the cruel violence done to my skin by scrubs that promised so much but delivered only ugly irritation. And yet, this By Terry Scrub is even more gentle than a high dollar washcloth. My evening cleanse ritual has become an exercise in self indulgent, rhapsodic purification using all the By Terry skincare products I've lately acquired. Their scent is heavenly, turning typically a boring face washing procedure into a hedonic, uplifting meditation on beauty. The rosy gel is massaged into dry skin, and rinsed off with warm water. I follow with one or more of the various By Terry cleansers, toners, serums and moisturizers that are returning my complexion to its earlier state of translucence and luminosity. My rooms are now filled with the luscious scent of a rose garden. My husband is demonstrably appreciative of the results of these efforts. And I feel reborn as I approach my 8th decade.
