Halloween Makeup Tutorial: David Bowie

Halloween is one of the only days of the year when you can totally transform into someone else. This year, we channeled our inner child and transformed Ashley, one of our Content Specialists, into a glam rocker! Read on to learn how she achieved this easy Halloween makeup look inspired by David Bowie!

Step 1: Makeup

Rock and roll involves more than makeup—usually a killer instrument, a great microphone and an enormous attitude! In this case, however, we started with some skin-loving prep. To achieve a smooth base for her makeup, Ashley used jane iredale Smooth Affair for Oily Skin. Formulated with a blend of unique antioxidants and botanicals, this mattifying primer blurs large pores and fine lines for a smooth, shine-free finish.

Next, apply foundation. Ashley chose the Dermablend Flawless Creator Multi-use Liquid Pigments in shade 0N because its mineral-rich formula provides weightless, buildable coverage. Plus, it’s oil-free and safe for all skin types! Finally, she set the look using Dermablend Loose Setting Powder for a smooth, matte finish that lasts up to sixteen hours.

Next, you’ll need to define your features to achieve the glam rock look of your dreams. Ashley chose Glo Skin Beauty Bronze in Sunkiss because it’s formulated with skin-safe minerals that provide antioxidant protection, and it gave her look dimension inspired by the Thin White Duke himself. Next, she added a touch of blush to her cheeks using the Glo Skin Beauty Blush in Spice Berry because it provides great color payoff with a subtle shimmer.

Now it’s time to bring on the lightening! First, Ashley used the Au Naturale Perfect Match Lip Pencil in Petal to outline the shape on her face. The 100% natural formula provides highly pigmented, long-wear color while nourishing with jojoba oil—perfect for musicians (and skin) of all types! Using a flat piece of cardboard to maintain a straight line, she formed the shape of the lightning bolt. Finally, she filled in the bolt using BY TERRY Lip Expert Matte Liquid Lipstick in Velvet Orchid because the smudge- and smear-proof formula dries on matte without overdrying skin.

Next, Ashley gave the lightning bolt some dimension by drawing a smaller line using the BY TERRY Lip Expert Matte Liquid Lipstick in the shade Sweet Flamenco and separated the two colors with the Dr. Hauschka Eye Definer in Black. Made with mineral pigments and nourishing botanicals, this gentle liner is perfect for a variety of makeup needs, and the multicolor look is perfect for stages across the world!

Finally, it’s time to finish the rest of the face. Rock and roll can get a little funky, so Ashley chose a fun eyeshadow shade using the Eleman Beauty The Elements Zephyr Wind Eyeshadow Palette using the shades Tempest and Glide. The highly pigmented, vegan-friendly eyeshadow colors are so smooth and blendable! Then, fill in your brow using a natural color. Ashley used the Youngblood Brow Artiste Kit in Blonde because the ultra-smooth shades perfectly matched her hair color.

Next, she added a hint of shimmer using the Au Naturale Highlighter Pure Powder Highlighter in Moondust because the natural formula provides a buildable shimmer that will leave you feeling like you’ve left for a life on mars. Finally, finish the eyes with mascara. Ashley chose the jane iredale Longest Lash Thickening & Lengthening Mascara because it keeps lashes conditioned while providing great color payoff! Last, but not least, add a fun gloss to your lips like the stila Beauty Boss Lip Gloss in Elevator Pitch. Formulated with hyaluronic filling spheres and luminous oils, this high-performance gloss gives lips a plump appearance while providing lightweight, stick-free hydration that will have you feeling like you’re in the golden years.

Step 2: Hair

No rock star is complete without an out of this world hairstyle. To mimic David Bowie’s iconic mullet, Ashley used Fatboy Tousle & Go Texture Spray to add some grit as the oil-absorbing formula helps tame frizz and flyaways while providing an undone texture. Using a teasing brush, she teased small sections of hair on the top of the head only and clipped that hair aside. Next, she took a one to two inch section of hair on each side and pinned it in the back, slicking back the look with Kenra Professional Platinum Whipped Taffy 20. The matte-finish, firm-hold soufflé can be used on damp or dry hair to keep styles in place without leaving a crunchy texture behind, making it an ideal product for those that like to switch up their look.

Once the sides of the hair have been pinned back, unclip the teased hair from the top of the head and smooth it out using a small comb. Pin any fallout or flyaways to the back of the head and finish with a medium-hold hairspray like the Kenra Professional Platinum HiDef Hairspray 16. The anti-humidity formula will ensure hair stays in place through live shows, dance parties and celebrity appearances!
