Ozempic hair: Everything you need to know about hair loss and GLP-1 use
If you've started a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic, Wegovy or Zepbound and noticed more hair shedding than usual in your brush or shower drain, you're not alone. As more people use these medications for weight loss and diabetes management, reports of “Ozempic hair” have become increasingly common.
A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology International found a link between GLP-1 use and increased hair shedding, with semaglutide and tirzepatide showing the strongest associations. The good news? In most cases, this isn't permanent hair loss.
“What most patients experience when taking GLP-1s isn't true hair loss at all. Rather, it's temporary hair shedding, known as telogen effluvium. While patients often associate the shedding with their medication, it's usually the rapid weight loss itself and nutrient deficiencies associated with GLP-1 use that disrupt the normal hair growth cycle,” explains board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Joel Schlessinger.
Here's what dermatologists want you to know about GLP-1s and your hair, plus what you can do to support healthy hair through the process.
Does Ozempic cause hair loss?
While there is a link between GLP-1 use and hair loss, the real culprit is more likely the rapid weight loss, rather than the medication itself.
Rapid weight loss places stress on the body, which can temporarily shift hair’s growth cycle from the active growth phase (anagen) into the resting phase (telogen). Several months later, those hairs naturally shed all at once.
“When the body loses weight quickly, it interrupts your natural growth cycle and responds by diverting resources away from hair growth,” explains board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon and cosmetic surgeon Dr. Daniel Schlessinger. “Patients are often surprised because the shedding doesn't usually start right away. It typically shows up three to six months after the weight loss begins.”
Diet also plays a role. Because GLP-1s significantly reduce appetite, some patients find themselves eating far less overall and reaching for convenient, less nutritious foods when they do eat. These foods are lower in the protein, iron, zinc, biotin and other nutrients hair follicles need to thrive, which can compound the shedding.
Why does GLP-1 hair shedding happen months later?
One of the most confusing aspects of telogen effluvium is that the hair shedding doesn't begin immediately. Hair follicles naturally cycle through three phases: - Anagen: Active growth (majority of the time you have hair, 80-90%) - Catagen: Transition phase (very short period of time, 1-2%) - Telogen: Resting before shedding (minor amount of time, 10%) - When hair growth is interrupted, these percentages change and much of the hair goes into telogen phase and is promptly shed
When the body experiences a major stressor, like rapid weight loss, more hair prematurely enters the telogen phase. Those hairs typically aren't shed until three to four months later, making it seem like the medication suddenly caused hair loss when the actual trigger occurred months earlier.
Is GLP-1 hair loss permanent?
So, is hair loss from GLP-1 permanent? According to our experts, Dr. Joel and Daniel Schlessinger, no. Unlike many forms of true hair loss, telogen effluvium is temporary, and hair typically returns once the body adjusts.
“What we’re seeing is a cycle, where it typically takes a few months after beginning GLP-1s and experiencing initial weight loss before hair shedding starts,” explains Dr. Joel Schlessinger. “This hair shedding usually lasts about two to three months and then tends to plateau. It takes about six months for hair to begin regrowing at a healthy, normal rate, and nine to twelve months to regain fullness. The entire cycle takes about twelve months, but eventually things should go back to normal.”
Of course, if your hair shedding seems excessive, concentrated in one area or doesn't improve over time, it's worth having a board-certified dermatologist take a closer look.
Is GLP-1 hair shedding preventable?
“It is important to know that if weight loss continues without any shift in nutritional intake, hair loss will continue as well,” says Dr. Daniel Schlessinger. “Keep in mind that most cases of telogen effluvium are due to one-time events, such as a loss of a loved one, hospitalization, or blood loss during childbirth. But with GLP-1s, the metabolic demand is ongoing, so don’t assume that the hair will come back just because most cases of telogen effluvium are temporary. If you don’t get your protein and nutrient intake back up, the hair thinning will persist.”
Understand that if you are taking a GLP-1, you will probably lose some hair. From there, a few simple strategies can help minimize shedding:
Prioritize nutrient-dense eating. Even with a smaller appetite, focus on protein-rich foods, leafy greens, healthy fats and other whole foods that supply the building blocks of healthy hair. Your dermatologist may also recommend supplements if bloodwork reveals deficiencies.
Be gentle with your hair and scalp. Avoiding unnecessary stress or damage can help mitigate shedding. That means skipping harsh chemical treatments and processing, like aggressive hair coloring, bleaching or chemical straightening, while your hair is in a vulnerable state. Opt for gentle shampoos and conditioners, minimize high-heat styling and avoid tight hairstyles that tug at the roots. Support your strands with targeted hair care. Formulas designed for hair loss and thinning can help create the ideal environment for healthy regrowth as your hair cycle normalizes.
