Should your makeup be part of your sun care routine? Board-certified dermatologists Drs. Joel and Daniel Schlessinger weigh in.

Sunscreen is in a lot of makeup products, but should it be your primary form of sun protection? Board-certified dermatologists Drs. Joel and Daniel Schlessinger say no, but a great routine includes both.

Whether you’re outside in the heat, inside your car or simply inside a building with a lot of natural light, sunscreen should be an integral part of your routine.

Broad-spectrum sunscreen not only defends against UVB rays, which burn the skin, but it also protects against UVA rays, which cause aging. Both types of UV rays can cause skin cancer, which is why you should stay on top of sun care whether you’re inside or outside.

What SPF should I use?

The sun protection factor that your products contain should be at least SPF 30. SPF 30 blocks 96.7% of UVB rays, whereas SPF 50 blocks about 98%. However, its protectiveness can depend on many factors. The quality of ingredients can play a role as well as the type of sun filters.

The SPF on the packaging may indicate a protection level, too, but the correct amount of product isn’t always used. Dr. Daniel Schlessinger recommends using SPF of 50 or higher to get the best protection and stresses the importance of reapplying and using plenty of sunscreen.

How to reapply sunscreen over makeup

Reapplying sunscreen is just as important as its initial application because its effectiveness wears off as time passes. However, applying your regular lotion-like sunscreen can mess up your makeup.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger recommends a brush-on sunscreen like Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-On Shield SPF 50. This can easily be brushed over the skin without disturbing existing makeup.

Alternatively, you can use a setting spray that contains sun filters. This type is also easy to use as you can simply spray it over your makeup when it’s time to reapply.
