Video Summary

In this video, board-certified dermatologists Drs. Joel and Daniel Schlessinger break down the most common types of hair loss and what triggers them. They cover the causes behind gradual thinning as well as sudden shedding so you know what to watch for.

What are the most common forms of hair loss?

The two most common types are androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium. Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male pattern and female pattern hair loss, is driven by hormones and age and tends to progress gradually over time. Telogen effluvium causes hair to shed rapidly and is often linked to illness, surgery or rapid weight loss, including weight loss associated with GLP-1 medications. Understanding which type you're dealing with is the first step toward finding the right treatment approach.
