Niacinamide vs vitamin C: How to use them like a skin care expert

When it comes to tried and true skin care ingredients, niacinamide and vitamin C are two of the most asked-about pairings in skin care. Both are known for delivering bright, healthy-looking skin, but can they be used together? And if so, how do you layer vitamin C and niacinamide for the best results?

To answer these questions, we asked board-certified dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, and Mohs surgeons Dr. Joel Schlessinger and Dr. Daniel Schlessinger for their expert insight. In this blog, we’ll discuss:

What does vitamin C do for your skin?

Beyond boosting radiance, this antioxidant offers multiple benefits that make it a must-have for any routine.

Dr. Daniel Schlessinger explains, “Vitamin C is one of the most studied ingredients in dermatology. It stimulates collagen production, which helps reduce fine lines and improve skin texture. It also acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting the skin from free radical damage caused by UV exposure and environmental pollutants."

Vitamin C is excellent for evening out skin tone and reducing the appearance of dark spots. It works by inhibiting melanin production, fading existing discoloration while preventing new spots from forming.

What does niacinamide do for your skin?

This form of vitamin B3 is a true multitasker that addresses multiple skin concerns simultaneously.

Dr. Joel Schlessinger explains, "Niacinamide is a great ingredient because it's so well-tolerated by all skin types. It helps regulate oil production, minimizes the appearance of pores and has anti-inflammatory properties that make it excellent for sensitive and acne-prone skin. It also strengthens the skin barrier and improves overall texture."

Niacinamide can also reduce transepidermal water loss, making it an excellent choice for those with dehydrated skin.

Can you use niacinamide with vitamin C?

Yes, you can absolutely use niacinamide and vitamin C together. In fact, both ingredients may help to improve results and overall skin health when used together.

Dr. Daniel Schlessinger explains, “There’s a myth that niacinamide and vitamin C cancel each other out, but that comes from outdated information. Modern formulations are pH-balanced and stabilized in ways that allow these ingredients to work synergistically."

Dr. Joel Schlessinger adds, “I recommend using both ingredients in your skin care routine. This allows you to get the brightening and protective benefits of vitamin C, plus the soothing and barrier-supporting effects of niacinamide.”

How to layer vitamin C and niacinamide

Understanding how to layer vitamin C and niacinamide is key to getting the most benefit from both ingredients.

“Generally, vitamin C serums are applied first after cleansing, followed by niacinamide, moisturizer and sunscreen,” recommends Dr. Daniel Schlessinger. “This ensures vitamin C penetrates effectively while niacinamide locks in hydration and helps soothe skin.”

When creating a skin care routine with niacinamide and vitamin C, start slowly and build tolerance gradually.

“I always tell my patients to introduce one new ingredient at a time," Dr. Joel Schlessinger advises. "This prevents irritation and helps you identify which ingredient is providing which benefit.”
