What Foundation is Right For You?

by Kristen|June 26, 2015
Which Foundation Type Is Right For Me?

Foundation is the base of all great makeup looks. The right foundation can create a flawless finish that takes your look to the next level. With so many different formulations to choose from, narrowing it down to one can be tricky. In this blog, we’ll explain the difference between the various types of foundation and how to choose the best formula for your complexion.

As a general rule of thumb, dry skin types should look for a liquid or cream foundation. Oily skin types would fare better with a powder or mattifying foundation.

Liquid

As the most natural-looking option for any skin type, liquid foundations are a good starting point. Liquid coverage can range from light to full and leave a dewy or matte finish. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, choose a formula with a water base. Oil-based formulas are better for dry, dehydrated skin, including patients going through chemotherapy.

Powder

Ideal for combination to oily skin types, powder foundations help control excess oil and shine. These formulas apply with a velvety finish and offer buildable coverage to fit your needs. Powder foundations are an excellent option for teens who are new to makeup because they’re easy to apply. Mature skin types should avoid powder formulas, which can settle in fine lines and wrinkles and accentuate signs of aging.

Mineral

Mineral makeup often comes in the form of a loose or pressed powder. This type of foundation is very versatile because it can offer sheer to full, buildable coverage. Many dermatologists recommend mineral makeup for sensitive and acne-prone skin types because the minerals are designed to sit on top of the skin’s surface rather than sinking into skin. This creates a natural barrier against environmental aggressors without clogging pores or causing irritation. Unlike conventional powders, minerals don’t tend to gather in fine lines and wrinkles. You’ll enjoy a natural, no-makeup finish with mineral foundations.

Cream

Cream foundations are great for dry, mature skin. These formulas often provide medium to full coverage, which is perfect for camouflaging imperfections and creating a clear canvas for the rest of your makeup. You’ll achieve a more dewy finish with this type of foundation. Cream formulas are ideal for anyone with scars or other marks to help skin look soft and smooth.

Cream-to-powder

These formulas apply like a cream, but dry with a powder finish. Cream-to-powder products are easy to apply with a no-mess finish. They also provide a fuller coverage compared to liquid foundations. You’ll love this type of foundation if you have drier skin, but prefer that smooth, powder finish.

Tinted moisturizers and BB creams

Tinted moisturizers are great for those who want color correction and hydration without too much coverage. BB creams take it a step further by combining the perks of a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen and anti-aging benefits. These formulas are easy to apply and work well with most skin types. Some women even switch out their regular foundation for a BB cream during the warmer months. Depending on the formula, tinted moisturizers can provide a dewy or matte finish.
